The Benefit of Tanning Salons

Long before the invention of tanning salons the sun is what gave everyone the beautiful golden brown hue of their skin. Most people in fact weren’t even partial to this look. In the early 1900s people thought of the sun as something to cover up from to avoid. In fact, pale skin was quite in vogue among the rich because tanned skin was thought to be had only by the working class laborers. They are the ones that had no choice but to spend the entire day tanning while they were working, whether they wanted to or not. By the 1920s tanning at all in the sun was thought to be very harmful to your body and quite improper by people of the upper class, so it because passé to submit your body to the sun. Coco Chanel changed that when she returned from a trip to the Mediterranean where her bronzed skin instantly became the rage in fashion.

Suddenly people were happy about tanning just so they could look wonderful and what they thought of as healthy. The outfits looked better on the women and people thought if they were tanning they would have an overall feeling of happiness. It wasn’t until the 1970s that tanning took it to the next level. With doctors continually saying that exposure to the sun was harmful because of the UV rays people were looking for other ways to tan. Hence, tanning salons became how people got the bronzed look of their skin without harmful rays. Most people agree than anything in excess was bad for you so that brought on warnings of tanning salons and tanning beds. However most agree that limited tanning was still better than spending hours baking in the sun, so tanning salons started popping up everywhere until you could almost find one on every street corner.

Although a tanning salon cannot promote total safety in tanning, many studies have uncovered some health benefits associated with moderate tanning. It was thought that they could:

  • Increase the ability to absorb calcium from their diets
  • Lower Serum Cholesterol levels
  • Lower the types of fats that are implicated in heart disease
  • Build self confidence and make a person happier because the tanning could give them the benefit of light even in the darkness of winter
Tanning salons became how adults could feel good about themselves when they didn’t have the time to sit out basking in the sun. Relaxation became almost as much of a reason to go to a tanning salon then did the tan itself. It is almost as if you are giving yourself a time-out because for 10 to 30 minutes you can just lay down or stand up in some cases and bask in the silence and quiet of the tanning process. It is considered light therapy for some, not just a way to look better.

To this day there are plenty of people that would still rather go to a tanning salon then to a beach, and for the moderate tanner this is perfectly healthy. It is when it goes beyond the weekly tanning session that people can see serious health consequences, but as with anything if you keep it under control you too can see the benefits of tanning salons.
